Newcastle Emlyn is a charming little town in rural mid-Wales. It is a ideal base for a relaxed self catering retreat. The town itself is a lovely spot to potter around. There are shops selling a variety of things from local produce, and hand crafts to antiques and groceries. Try the local Welsh beef, welsh cakes and bara brith (fruit loaf).

The castle for which Newcastle Emlyn is named lies near the river at the bottom the town. The surrounding area is a patchwork of lush country-side and rolling hills, and the river Teifi running on to the sea. The river is home to salmon, which can be seen leaping up stream. There are also mills, driven by the water producing Welsh tweed and flour. The Teifi meets the sea at Cardigan, which is well worth a visit. As is the whole of the Cardigan bay coast area.

There are cliff paths, beaches, water sports at New Quay, the university of Aberystyth, pretty Aberaeon, and dolphins out in the bay. All within easy reach of Newcastle Emlyn. Inland there is Lampater with its university, and Llanybydder holding its regular horse sales. You could opt for a day’s trekking or cycling, or take your own walking boots. This great country for getting out and about, enjoying the fresh air, the beautiful scenery, and a the quieter pace of life. And at the end of a day sightseeing or relaxing there are plenty of good local pubs, and a very warm welcome.
