More familiar to many people as Cardiganshire, Ceredigion is a Welsh county located on the west coast. Steeped in interesting history and benefiting from a strong cultural identity which gives the area a distinctive ambience, Ceredigion also offers miles of beautiful coastline and hill country which provides ample opportunity for outdoor pursuits of all types. Although part of the UK, the widespread use of spoken Welsh and the important place Ceredigion holds in sustaining the Welsh written word and culture (the National Library of Wales is located here) ensures that visitors benefit from many new and different experiences.

The large town of Aberystwyth is a chance for visitors to enjoy some excellent shopping or find out more about this part of the world through a visit to the Ceredigion Museum. Many people rent a flat or cottage in the town as there is the chance to combine all the fun of a seaside holiday with a choice of superb restaurants, high-quality entertainment (the Aberystwyth Arts Centre hosts some top acts throughout the year) and the opportunity to sail or fish in an area of spectacular natural beauty. If you haven’t brought your own boat, local sailors often have one for hire or conduct guided tours around the coastline. Even if you normally prefer to stay on terra firma, the chance to spot seals as you sail usually proves irresistible.

Inland, there are many miles of gently rolling hills which are ideal for ramblers of all abilities. The Rheidol and Aeron valleys offer some particularly appealing trails. Walking enthusiasts frequently rent one of the charming stone cottages located in these tranquil rural areas, planning a route in a different direction each day of their stay. Delightfully different, Ceredigion is an ideal location for enjoying the outdoors in many rewarding ways.
