Visitors have been enjoying the gentle charms of Bideford for generations and this lovely spot never loses its luster. Set in picturesque North Devon, the town makes a perfect retreat for a relaxing break, but there are lots of attractions close by too, if you want a little diversion.

Lundy Island is within easy reach, via the passenger ferry. The Big Sheep, In Abbotsham, is perfect for rural fun, pony rides, mountain boarding and more. If you are holidaying with the children, time your visit there to greet the arrival of spring lambs and you will be very popular with your little ones!

But you don’t have to venture that far for an enjoyable time. Bideford itself is perfect for mooching, with antique shops in its back streets, and with treasures to be found at the top of the town, in The Pannier Market – an Aladdin’s Cave for classic vinyl, books, jewellery, gifts, or mementos of your stay.

Bideford’s most famous son, the writer Charles Kingsley, was charmed by this town, by its historic port and by the Long Bridge spanning the River Torridge. Happily the Bideford he enjoyed while he penned Westward Ho! remains pleasingly unspoilt.
