Holiday cottages in Tyne And Wear

Tyne and Wear in North East England is a fantastic holiday cottage destination, and the twin cities of Newcastle and Gateshead offer an enormous selection of things to see and do.

The River Tyne separates Newcastle from Gateshead and the Quayside is a very popular place for walking, dining out or making the most of the nightlife. On the Gateshead side of the river, you’ll find the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The Baltic occupies a landmark building and recently hosted the Turner Prize exhibition. A little further along, you’ll notice the Sage building. This stunning concoction of glass and steel was designed by award winning architect, Norman Foster. The Sage hosts musical performances from a vast range of artists and it’s worth checking ahead for forthcoming events. Even if you’re not particularly interested in art or music, both buildings are open to the public and are well worth a visit.

There are a number of bridges over the River Tyne, including the famous Tyne Bridge and the more recent Millennium Bridge. You can find out more about the bridges by booking your holiday cottage in Tyne and Wear to coincide with the Bridges Festival in early August. The family friendly weekend includes street theatre, regional food and river based pyrotechnics.

Finally, no trip to Tyne and Wear can be complete without a quick visit to Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North which is possibly one of the most hotly debated pieces of public art.
