Even better, plan your trip on a Wednesday on Saturday when the market place lives up to its name with stalls selling all manner of local foodstuffs – perfect for the self-catering cottage holidaymaker. From there, make the short walk to the Rutland County Museum and the great hall of Oakham Castle, with its unique collection of ancient horseshoes. Both museum and castle are well worth a visit and admission is free!
The internationally renowned Rutland Water Nature Reserve and Reservoir is just a few miles east of Oakham. This is a wonderful venue for nature lovers and bird watchers, with something to do almost every weekend, from photography to hedge-laying, as well as a wide range of family and children-orientated activities.
For water sports lovers, Rutland Water offers a sailing club, canoeing and wind surfing. If you prefer to stay dry, try your hand at mini golf, or work off some excess energy on one of the cycle paths – cycle hire is available – or just enjoy one of the tranquil country walks alongside the lakes.
For all the family, no matter what their ages, there is something to do every day of the week in this lively and fascinating area.
