Oakham is a typical example of a picturesque English country market town, situated in stunning countryside in England’s smallest county. For those with an interest in history, Oakham will not disappoint. Visit the architecturally impressive market place, with its 500 year old Buttercross and stocks.

Even better, plan your trip on a Wednesday on Saturday when the market place lives up to its name with stalls selling all manner of local foodstuffs – perfect for the self-catering cottage holidaymaker. From there, make the short walk to the Rutland County Museum and the great hall of Oakham Castle, with its unique collection of ancient horseshoes. Both museum and castle are well worth a visit and admission is free!
