Escaping to the seaside…

appledore

Described as the ‘little, white fishing village’ by Victorian novelist Charles Kingsley, North Devon’s Appledore is a beauty to behold.

“We’re going to Appledore for a coffee”. This was my first visit to Appledore and since that outing, has not been my last. I still to this day, cannot believe I had never stepped foot in the gorgeous hamlet, having lived in Devon for 24 years! I didn’t realise what I had been missing.

Steeped with shipbuilding history dating back hundreds of years, Appledore was and still is a famous fishing village, loved by the locals and tourists alike. Home to the North Devon Maritime Museum, Appledore prides itself on sharing its history with visitors from across the world.

Upon arrival, the first thing you notice is the maze of narrow cobbled streets and brightly coloured cottages, decorated with flower beds and hanging baskets. Greeted by a row of quaint shops, taverns and a quiet atmosphere, I couldn’t help but think that Appledore seems the perfect place to relax for a seaside adventure!

Things to do

For all you exercise fanatics, bringing your family bike collection here is a must! Over one hundred and eighty miles of gorgeous landscape can be seen from the famous Tarka Trail. This beautiful track features heart-pounding views of the countryside, beaches and landscapes alike with plenty of rest stops available for those treasured family picnics.

Timing your holiday correctly can be fatal as you would not want to miss the Appledore & Instow Regatta! This maritime event never fails to entertain. Held in the month of August, the Regatta has plenty of activities to keep the kids and partners amused including a traditional crabbing competition, art show and sailing boat race; A real laugh for the whole family.

If you’re into venturing out of your holiday destination for a bit of exploration then a short drive in each direction will bring you to another exciting part of Devon. A five minute drive will bring you out at the famous Westward Ho! Known for it’s pebble ridge and old style arcade, Westward Ho! has fantastic walking opportunities as well as cute gift shops to buy that Devon holiday statue you’ve always wanted!

Alongside Westward Ho! is Bideford high street. Only a five minute drive away from Appledore with all the high street shops you would expect (Boots, M&Co etc), but if that doesn’t fill your shopping bag, then try Atlantic Village with a wide selection of stores including M&S outlet, Asda superstore and local surfwear company, Saltrock.

I would highly recommend Appledore as a holiday destination as it has everything you would need to create great memories! As we all know…the UK isn’t home to fantastic weather and scorching heat waves but none of that seems to matter when you’re looking out over the estuary wolfing down Devon’s finest Hocking’s ice cream!

Take your pick from some of the holiday cottages available in this stunning location. You will not be disappointed!
