The County Durham village of Coundon is situated in one of the most beautiful counties of England, with a mining history which dates back to 1350. A short drive to the east brings you to bustling town of Bishop Auckland, elevated above the River Wear and known as the Gateway to Weardale. The town centre hosts an arts complex should you be in search of a bit of culture, whilst there's a range of independent shops to peruse, where you're certain to find the perfect holiday keepsake. On the outskirts of the town you can wander the ancient stones of the Binchester Roman Fort, the largest in the county or perhaps experience a magnificent evening of North East storytelling at Kynren, a seven acre stage with pyrotechnics, stunning lighting and water effects all part of the mix. A little further afield there are the delights of Barnard Castle with its cobbled streets and medieval castle towering over the River Tees, head north to Durham City home to the magnificent Cathedral, with its breathtaking vaulted ceiling and splendid architecture. The cathedral, the final resting place of the Venerable Bede, is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the whole of Europe. Durham Castle stands side by side with the cathedral, on a prominent hilltop site, encircled by the wooded slopes of the River Wear below. The city itself offers elegant buildings and fascinating narrow streets with excellent shopping, eating and drinking to suit all tastes.
