Cockburnspath is a small, beautiful and untouched village, situated just inland of the North Sea coast. A perfectly serene base for surfers, cyclists and walkers, the breathtakingly-beautiful beach at Pease Bay is less than two miles away and the Southern Upland Way, Scotland's longest official Long Distance Path, terminates here at the village's thistle-covered cross. An ideal starting point for those wishing to tour both the East Lothian and the Scottish Borders, the village centres on the market place around which it has developed over time, originally dating back to the 1500s. Also dating back to the 16th century is the parish church, St Helens, with an interesting and unusual circular tower at its west end. There's a village shop where you can pick up supplies, as well as a Post Office, whilst the hamlet of Cove is just a mile away and boasts a picturesque harbour. Ideally placed for visiting the local towns of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Dunbar, North Berwick and Eyemouth as well as the villages of Coldingham, St. Abbs and Burnmouth with their small harbours and Nature Reserves, Cockburnspath is a great base for a touring holiday. As well as a selection of pubs, there is a regular main line train service running from Dunbar, just 8 miles away, giving easy access to Edinburgh, with its impressive shops and history. A little further afield lie the castles of Northumberland, including Bamburgh, Holy Island, Chillingham and the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens. There are also many links golf courses in the area as well as surfing at Thornton Loch and diving at St Abbs. This is a superb location with plenty to see and do.
